Guarding Mental Health Through a Pandemic

Disruptions to working life, home life, the economy, and Government legislation made 2020 a massively challenging year for most professionals. Now, we see ourselves in Lockdown 3.0, and while the nation has endured lockdowns in the past, many are noting that the fatigue from the mounting levels of stress and anxiety felt across the nation has crushed the level of endurance and positive mental wellbeing that the UK population feels they have against the latest restrictions.

With a burnout crisis on the horizon, it’s important for workers to know how to guard themselves against poor mental health throughout the latest restrictions. As it's Blue Monday - which is meant to be the most depressing Monday of the year, it's even more important to know how to protect your mental wellbeing.

Here are some top tips from wellbeing specialists:

Set low expectations

Choose peace over perfection. Don’t try to be overly productive during the next few months, take each day as it comes in a calm manner. Not only will productivity naturally increase, but the chances of burnout are also lower.

Keep screen fatigue down

For daily catch-ups with colleagues, utilise phone calls and leave video calls for important or more serious meetings.

Good sleep hygiene is key

When stress kicks in, sleep is one of the best remedies to help reduce anxiety during the next few months. Creating a bedtime routine and avoiding using smart devices before sleeping are key to wake up feeling energised, calm and maintaining a positive mental wellbeing.

Consume good news

Our phones and social media are the only way to stay connected with people during lockdown, however, it’s easy to fall into the trap of spending too much time-consuming negative news. Unfollow accounts that make you feel bad and focus on reading good news over bad.

Set small goals

A sense of accomplishment can do wonders for the mind, so setting yourself small achievable goals that you can tick off your list each day is a good idea.
